Joel Banes, a native Memphian, founded Memphis Capital Group in 2006 with a wealth of experience in SBA and USDA loans. As the President and CEO, Joel leads the firm from its headquarters in Memphis, Tennessee, continuing his deep-rooted entrepreneurial spirit.

Joel Banes is an accomplished financial strategist who built Banes Capital Management and Banes Capital Group, and played a pivotal role in advising John Hanover in the acquisition of Hanover Securities, an institutional fixed-income broker-dealer. Under Joel’s guidance, Hanover Securities became one of the few SBA-approved pool assemblers in the nation. The firm expanded its team of experts and now serves banks, credit unions, municipalities, insurance companies, and money managers with its fixed-income solutions and strategic insights.

In 2006, the Memphis Capital High Income Fund was founded, investing in the government-guaranteed portions of SBA loans. With his deep understanding of the SBA profitability model, Joel recognized the opportunity to provide high-net-worth individuals access to this profitable investment avenue.
In January 2023, Joel rebranded his companies under the Memphis Capital name, leading to rapid growth. The fund now manages over $250 million in investments, and the combined firms employ more than 40 professionals.

Joel began his career at Duncan Williams in 1984 as a registered representative, excelling in sales before leading the trading of government-guaranteed loans. He rose to head the department and became a top producer at Duncan Williams during his 17-year tenure. Later, he launched a successful SBA pooling and trading operation at First Matrix Investment Services (FMIS), where his leadership helped Matrix Bancorp become the country’s top SBA Pool assembler.

Joel is an active member of the Memphis Chamber of Commerce Chairman’s Circle and a passionate supporter of community initiatives, including St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and Make-A-Wish. He holds a degree from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, and has attended executive classes at the prestigious Wharton School of Finance, University of Pennsylvania.
